1989 US Cannabis Therapeutic Research Program, State of California, 1989, This Phase III study (the last step before approval for prescription use) demonstrated smoked marijuana's effectiveness for reducing nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in clinical settings. Despite the fact that this study proved the medical utility of cannabis as an anti-emetic, marijuana was not approved for medical use.
