While some employers are hesitant to request a drug test from applicants, utilizing a drug test as part of the interview process is a perfect way to eliminate individuals who engage in drug use. For the most part, employers seek job applicants that are hard working and reliable. Moreover, employers want to trust their employees. There is a pattern among individuals who take illegal drugs. In some cases, drug users steal, cheat, lie, and so forth. This is done in an attempt to support their drug habit, and to conceal their addiction. By administering periodic drug tests, employers are able to detect which employees have a drug use problem
There are several ways to administer a drug test. Government agencies generally require job applicants to pass a drug test before they are offered a job position. After passing the initial drug test, the employee may be required to undergo periodic, random drug testing. Testing of this sort occurs without notice. Thus, if an employee has a drug habit, the drug will be detected in their blood stream. Some feel that random drug testing is a violation of privacy. However, this is the smartest method for administering a test. If employers were to announce drug tests, the employee would have an opportunity to stop drug use and pass the test.
Employers and agencies that administer drug tests can obtain results with a hair sample, urine sample, saliva sample, and blood sample. Each agency has a different method for giving a drug test. Most insurance companies and employers will obtain a blood sample. Urine samples and saliva samples are effective; however, they are unable to measure long term drug use. After a few days to a couple of weeks, the drugs are no longer detected using these tests. The best method for administering a drug test is obtaining a hair sample. Hair samples are highly effective because they can detect drug use for up to six months.
