Our teacher, Ms. Smith, asked us to find out as much as we could about commonly used and abused drugs. It was up to us to determine what drugs cause the most problems and how we should complete the assignment. A major challenge wasn't only to present the facts, but to help people our age to make no-use decisions about drug use.

To make the assignment more fun and interesting, we decided to form four research teams. Together we called ourselves the Prevention Posses. All of our findings are in this book - which we think is fun, informative, and creative!

The four Prevention Posses researched and studied the following drugs. We've also included fun activities for you to do while you learn more about the drugs we focused on.

Prevention Posse #1: Prescription Drugs, Over-the-Counter Drugs, and Inhalants (drugs that can be purchased legally).

Prevention Posse #2: Marijuana and LSD.

Prevention Posse #3: Methamphetamine and Cocaine.

Prevention Posse #4: Heroin.

We interviewed other students, read a lot, looked at a lot of educational television, listened to related radio programs, visited the library, talked to people at the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and found out where to get free information.

Before we got started, Ms. Smith asked us if the Prevention Posses would be addressing alcohol and tobacco. The class knew that these substances could be dangerous, and could lead to experimenting with other drugs. We decided to concentrate on the drugs that were most unfamiliar to us, like marijuana, heroin, LSD, methamphetamine, and cocaine.

"TV sometimes entertains us with people doing drugs. This isn't right. We need some way for youth and children to be separated from what they see on TV." -DEA Special Agent
