| Drugs Abuse Drugs abuse has always been a serious societal problem, but in recent times, it seems to have become even more so. If we are to believe the media reports that we hear each day, it would appear that the problem of drugs abuse has reached a critical point, and immediate action is needed to resolve the situation. Drugs abuse is so pernicious because it affects minds, and when minds are destroyed, futures are torn apart. It is bad enough when drugs destroy the minds of adults – it is twice as bad when drugs destroy the minds of our children. The children are the future of the nation, and if they are struck down at an early age, then the coming years suddenly become gloomy and without hope. However, negativity will do nothing to solve this problem. The problem of drugs abuse must be studied, understood, and remedied. Here are some things that we can do: Improve education. Children have to be told at early age just how harmful these drugs can be. While some of the youth know on some level that drugs abuse is harmful, they do not seem to comprehend how much. As long as children are willing to try the damned things out, the danger will exist. Drug education must reach a point wherein children know, without a shadow of a doubt, that drugs ruin lives. They must understand both intellectually and emotionally that taking these substances will put their future in grave jeopardy, and that it simply is not worth it to get involved in them. Clamor for better legislation. As a citizen you have the right to demand legislation which you believe is beneficial to the nation’s interests. Today’s drug laws are lax and provide many loopholes for smart criminals to escape. To prevent drugs abuse, harsher penalties must be levied on both those to sell the drugs and those who buy them. Unless this is done, there will be little to discourage the youth from drugs abuse.   Disclaimer: Cliff Schaffer does not personally endorse or support any of the comments made within the writings of this article. |
