Prozac
Suffering from depression can have devastating effects. People who are chronically depressed (defined by two or more weeks) have a debilitating illness. In many cases, those who are depressed either cannot sleep or sleep too much. They feel worthless, guilty and sometimes even suicidal. There is help for people who have feelings of depression. Prescription drugs such as Prozac can help. Prozac is a very popular prescription to treat chronic depression, although it must be used with care and supervision.

Prozac is the most commonly prescribed medication to treat depression. It is estimated that taking Prozac has helped approximately 54 million people around the world. Many of these patients did not just take the medicine for depression either. It has been effectively prescribed to treat eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia, obsessive-compulsive disorders and panic attacks.
The way depression works is not fully known. There are studies that indicate that those who suffer over and over again from depression have some sort of chemical imbalance in the brain’s neurotransmitters. This part of the brain allows nerve cells to communicate with each other. If this is not working correctly, it is believed to cause depression. Prozac is used to correct the imbalance and increases the body’s levels of serotonin, which leads to feelings of well being and happiness.
When you go to your doctor for depression, he or she will thoroughly evaluate you and your health history. He or she will talk to you about your feelings to determine whether or not medication such as Prozac will benefit you. If he or she believes that it will, you will be given directions on how to take the medication and how often. To get the best benefit from taking this prescription medication it is important that you carefully follow the directions and seek regular check ups with your doctor.
